Ohio's natural beauty is one of its greatest assets, and springtime never fails to bring the area's gorgeous vistas to life. Why not take a spring hike to get some fresh air and exercise while enjoying the sights? Several of our real estate agents are avid hikers who spend a lot of time on the local trails. Here are some of the parks and nature preserves that they think are most worth visiting this time of year.
- Russ Nature Reserve - 2380 Kemp Road, Beavercreek, OH 45431
Russ Nature Reserve sits at the corner of Kemp Road and Beaver Valley Road, just a few minutes away from the city core. This preserved green space features nearly 4 miles of winding trails, including a tree trail with signposts pointing out the various indigenous trees growing nearby. Several of the other trails also have notable features, such as a pond, an apiary, a garden, and the Lovely Nature Playscape (a playground made of 100% natural materials for young children to enjoy).
- Creekside Reserve - 761 Factory Road, Beavercreek, OH 45434
It only takes about an hour to walk the Creekside Reserve loop trail. Most of the ground here is flat and covered in hard-packed dirt, making it easy for even young kids to walk on. The path takes you around the idyllic Little Beaver Creek and the surrounding meadows, many of which are bursting with fresh wildflowers. You might even spot some of the wild deer herds that like to graze here in the springtime.
- Magee Park - 1820 Little Sugarcreek Road, Dayton, OH 45440
Magee Park is a small pocket of green space tucked into the heart of Dayton. Spanning a mere 4.3 acres, it's just big enough to accommodate a few hiking trails that take visitors through the woods to the edge of Little Sugar Creek. The water is extremely shallow at this spot and can easily be splashed in or waded through, adding a fun extra activity to enjoy while you're out on your walk.
- Beavercreek Wetlands Reserve - 2090 Dayton-Xenia Road, Beavercreek, OH 45434
Some of Ohio's most beautiful wetlands are located right here at Beavercreek Wetlands Reserve. The space includes dozens of acres of floodplains, marshland, and, of course, Beaver Creek itself. The 1.25-mile trail that stretches over all of these areas is perfect for a leisurely spring stroll. Aspiring birdwatchers should also keep an eye out for the many waterfowl living on this preserve.
- Sweet Arrow Reserve - 789 Little Sugarcreek Road, Dayton, OH 45440
Sweet Arrow Reserve is home to seven different loop trails, each no more than 1.5 miles long. Some take you through the woods while others cut a path through the prairie lands. All of them offer incredible views of the landscape, including some areas with colorful wildflowers on display. Visit around sunset to watch the sun go down over the open fields while you walk!
- Narrows Reserve - 2575 Indian Ripple Road, Beavercreek, OH 45385
Narrows Reserve is a quiet nature preserve on the outskirts of downtown Beavercreek. The park offers 6 miles of mostly flat trails with a few flights of wooden steps. Some of these trails pass near the Little Miami River, offering opportunities to splash in the water or even launch a kayak or canoe. Other trails lead to the reserve's apiary and the on-site raptor rescue for birds of prey undergoing rehabilitation.
